Saint Louis Martin was born in 1823 in Bordeaux, France. As a young man, he considered entering religious life and sought admission to a monastery, but was not accepted because he had not yet learned Latin. Instead, he became a skilled watchmaker and jeweler, known for his honesty, discipline, and devotion.

Saint Zélie Guérin was born in 1831 in Gandelain, France. Like Louis, she also initially desired religious life, hoping to join the Daughters of Charity, but was not accepted. She later learned the delicate craft of lacemaking, eventually establishing a successful business producing Alençon lace.

Louis and Zélie met in 1858 in Alençon, France. Tradition recounts that when Zélie first saw Louis crossing a bridge, she felt an interior inspiration that this was the man God had chosen for her. They married just three months later.

At first, they considered living in continence as a brother-and-sister union, inspired by spiritual ideals, but with guidance from a confessor, they embraced married life fully. Together they had nine children, though four died in infancy or early childhood—sorrows that deeply marked the family. Their five surviving daughters all entered religious life, including Thérèse, later known worldwide as Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

Their home was marked by prayer, simplicity, generosity to the poor, discipline, joy, and profound trust in God. Louis was known as a tender father, deeply involved in family life, while Zélie combined entrepreneurial skill with loving motherhood.

Zélie was diagnosed with breast cancer and died in 1877 at the age of 45. Louis continued raising their daughters with remarkable devotion, later accompanying Thérèse in her journey toward the convent. In his later years, Louis suffered from serious illness, including cognitive decline, and died in 1894.

They were canonized together in 2015 by Pope Francis, becoming the first married couple canonized together as a couple (not merely individually recognized saints).
